Salt is a condiment used to enhance the taste of food and preserve it. Consumed in excess, it has significant repercussions on health.

The French consume on average 10 grams of salt per day. Afssa recommends a maximum consumption of 4 grams per day. The WHO is more strict, and recommends 2 grams per day. Excess salt is a risk factor for osteoporosis and heart problems. Here are 5 tips to limit consumption.

1. LIMIT SALTY FOODS

Read labels. Reduce your consumption of industrial meals. Their salt content is too high. They contain an average of 3 grams of salt per serving. Salt, very present in cold meats, is used as a preservative.

2. 80% CONSUMED SALT IS HIDDEN

It is particularly hidden in breakfast cereals, biscuits and sparkling water (e-health). Some commercial cereals can contain up to 2 grams of salt per 100 grams. It is used strategically to stimulate the appetite. Limit your consumption of canned vegetables and industrial soups.

3. PREFER HOME-MADE

Cooking yourself is the best way to control the salt intake in your diet. You have the choice of enhancing your dishes with other condiments such as garlic, onion, thyme, pepper, fresh herbs, etc.

4. DO NOT RESALT AFTER COOKING

Salt foods only during cooking. This gives time for the salt to soak into them. Do not keep the salt shaker near you at the table.

5. CHOOSE YOUR WATER CAREFULLY

Read and compare water bottle labels. Waters such as Courmayeur, Perrier, Volvic and Hepar are low in salt.
